While in an Adobe XD Creative Jam competition, my partner, Randee Rose Joven, and I designed a third-party app for high school students to fulfill their community service hours in a simple, fun, and engaging way.

Intro

πŸ“‹ Overview

Today, completing community service is a requirement for secondary school. It establishes the foundation of giving back and building character among adolescents.

However, though it does much good, it becomes a bit of a pain when logging hours. Most people give and forget, so how do we make community service easy and fun for high school students?

First, we had to find our key findings when it comes to adolescents and community service. So we conducted an interview and a survey that accumulated over 40 responses of helpful data. This is what we found…

✨

Key Finding

87.8% of people said they prefer to volunteer with a friend or a group.

😑

Work and school demands are often higher priorities than community service, and resources are often hard to access.

Key Reason To Volunteer

β€œHelping and giving back to my community.”

πŸ’’ Pain Points

There were many other pain points that supported our key problem. Most revolved around transportation, service feeling like a chore or not having many options that peak their interest.

πŸ§‘β€πŸ’» Opportunities

With our discoveries, we brainstormed a few possible features we believed would solve our main issues.

Based on our key finding of many individuals preferring to attend with a group, we examined social apps like Snapchat to inspire friends to connect.

We also thought it would be great for users to contact organizations, so we analyzed messaging platforms.

Other features like maps, reward badges, and tracking, were also on our radar.

🌱 App Name

From there we created our app name and concluded our key mission: Boost! The word boost means to help or encourage something to increase or improve.

Boost’s mission is to make students aged 14-18 volunteering experience easier to find opportunities, sign up, invite friends, and boost their community while putting a smile on other people’s faces.

We held three main pillars…

⚑️

πŸ” Discover Opportunities

In addition to the home page, where suggestions of opportunities are given based on location, preferences, and upcoming events, we wanted to carry that over into the Opportunities page as well. Users will be able to sort their recommendations to quickly find events based on their interests. Users can also favorite opportunities to save for later, share, or instantly sign up.

πŸ‘― Participate with Friends

Boost gives users the option to invite friends to participate in volunteering opportunities. They can also use the messaging feature to ask friends for a ride, message organizers directly, and make new connections within their community. Through the social feed, users can also boost and encourage others on the positive impact they are making on their community

⚑️ Boost Your Community

Boost also provides a place for users to interact with their community through a feed of local activities, friend activities, and a personal dashboard to view, boost, or send notes to friends while also chatting with one another to communicate about events. Users can then track their positive efforts on their profile page through badges and their personalized hourly tracker.

✏️ Concepts

My partner and I placed Honorable Mentions out of 430 competitors and over 100 schools internationally! We were Deeziners lol. And don’t mind my tabs.
